Sunday 18 May 2014 3pm
Cardiff Winds at Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham GL52 3JE

Cardiff Winds is a quintet of top professional musicians, Sarah Newbold (flute), Catriona Mackinnon (oboe), Robert Plane (clarinet), Donald Clist (horn) and Meyrick Alexander (bassoon). They all have links to Cardiff's major musical institutions, including the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Programme:

Ancient Hungarian Dances - FARKAS
Summer Music - BARBER
Wind Quintet Op.14 - HOLST
Morning Music - DEREK SMITH
Trois Pieces Breves - IBERT
17 Variations - DAMASE

This concert featuring five superb wind players promises to be a vibrant afternoon of some of the best music written for this combination. The opening work by Farkas, though written in 1953, draws on and retains the spirit of dances from the 17th Century; Morning Music by contemporary Malvern-resident composer Derek Smith is rhythmically engaging and entertaining; and the four remaining works are seasoned classics from the wind quintet repertoire.
